Sleep competitions are created on iPhone. Android players can join one and see the scores, but the Android app doesn’t read sleep from Health Connect yet, so their sleep may not count. The Android join screen says so before you join.
Sleep is one of the numbers you can race in Head to Head, next to Steps, Calories, and Exercise. Most time asleep wins. It’s a way to compete that doesn’t depend on how active you are.

How a day scores

Each day scores 1 point per minute asleep, up to 9 hours (540 points). The leaderboard adds up every day in the competition and shows scores in hours and minutes, like “7h 32m”.
  • Only time asleep counts. Awake time during the night doesn’t.
  • Naps count too, inside the same 9-hour daily cap.
  • A night counts on the day you wake up. A night from 11 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday counts entirely for Tuesday. So the night before a competition’s last day counts on that last day.
  • On iPhone, sleep comes from Apple Health. If more than one device records your sleep, the tracker you picked as your source wins, so wearing two devices to bed never adds time.
Example: you sleep 7h 32m overnight and nap for 45 minutes in the afternoon. That day scores 8h 17m (497 points). A 10-hour night scores 9h (540 points), the cap.

Create a Sleep competition

Hosting a Sleep competition takes a Membership or Pro. On a free plan, Sleep shows in the picker with a lock, and tapping it opens the upgrade screen.
  1. Tap +, then New competition, and choose Compete.
  2. On the scoring step, choose Head to Head.
  3. On Pick the metric, answer What are you racing on? with Sleep.
  4. Keep the competition private. Sleep competitions are for friends only.
  5. Finish the wizard and tap Create competition.
Coach Mo can also draft a Sleep competition for you if your plan can host one.

Join a Sleep competition

Joining is free on every plan. Before you join, the app tells you:
  • Other players will see your sleep time. That’s how the leaderboard works.
  • If we haven’t seen any sleep from you in the last 14 days, you’ll score 0 unless your device starts sending sleep data. You can still join, and start wearing your watch or ring to bed.

Rules that can’t change

  • Friends only. A Sleep competition can’t be public, always-on, or part of a seasonal event. Trying to make one public shows “Sleep competitions are for friends only. Make it private to use Sleep.”
  • No scoring-change vote to Sleep. The host can’t ask the group to switch an existing competition to Sleep. See changing scoring.
  • Editing is iPhone only. On Android, editing a Sleep competition shows “Can’t edit on Android yet”, and nothing changes.
