# Reading Coach Mo's thinking

> What the 'Thought for X' header under Mo's responses means, what each trace step icon represents, and how to read what Mo looked up.

When Coach Mo answers a question, you can see what it looked up to form that response. This is called the **activity trace**, and it's there so you can verify Mo's reasoning instead of trusting a black box.

## Where the trace appears

Right under each of Mo's responses, you'll see a collapsible header like:

> **Thought for 4s · 3 steps**

Tap it to expand the trace and see the individual steps Mo took.

## What it looks like in flight

While Mo is generating a response, the header is open by default and reads **"Thinking..."** until the first step arrives, then **"N steps"** as steps fire in real time. Once the response is done, it settles to **"Thought for Xs · N steps"** and re-collapses (or stays open, depending on your settings).

If a response takes a while, the "Thinking..." text gets a gentle pulse so you know it's still working, not stuck.

## Step types

Each step has a small icon that tells you what kind of step it was:

| Icon | What it means |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| 🧠 Brain | Reasoning — Mo thinking through how to answer |
| 🔍 Magnifying glass | Memory searched — Mo looked through Files for context |
| 📄 Document | Document read — Mo opened a specific memory document |
| ➕ Plus circle | Bullet added — Mo wrote something new to Files |
| ✏️ Pencil circle | Bullet updated — Mo edited an existing memory |
| 📦 Archivebox | Bullet archived — Mo removed an outdated memory |
| 📊 Bar chart | Activity read — Mo looked at your real activity numbers |

Tap a step to see its detail in a sheet — the actual content Mo retrieved or wrote.

## Why this exists

Trust shouldn't be a black box. If Mo says "you've been hitting your Move ring on weekdays but dropping off Saturdays," you can pop the trace, see that Mo actually read your last 7 days of activity, and verify the claim against reality.

It's also useful when Mo gets something wrong — the trace usually tells you where it went sideways (read the wrong document, missed a step, etc.).

## Keeping the trace expanded by default

Open **Coach Mo settings** and flip **Keep thinking expanded** on. From then on, every trace opens automatically so you don't have to tap each time.

## What the trace doesn't show

The trace shows the steps Mo took — but the actual prompts and AI responses themselves stay between you and the AI provider, with PII redacted. See [AI and your data](/account/ai-and-your-data) for what reaches the AI provider in any given step.
