# Distance competitions

> How Distance scoring works on iPhone: which workouts count, how a day scores, the optional target to qualify, miles or kilometers, and sharing results with the organizer.

<Note>
  Distance competitions are iPhone only. The Android app can't create one and doesn't show distance results or the sharing options on this page.
</Note>

Distance is a scoring mode for runners and walkers. It counts the distance in workouts people record, not every step of the day. Distance is free to host on every plan, and anyone can join.

## How a day scores

Each day scores **1 point per meter** covered in recorded workouts that day, rounded to whole meters. There's no daily cap. The leaderboard adds up every day in the competition.

* **Only recorded workouts count.** Everyday walking around the house doesn't add distance. Start a workout on your watch, phone, or fitness app so the distance is saved as a workout.
* **The host picks which workouts count:** **Runs** (outdoor, trail, and treadmill runs) or **Runs and walks** (runs plus walks, hikes, and treadmill workouts). Cycling and swimming don't count.
* **A workout saved by two apps counts once.** When workouts overlap in time, such as a watch run that also lands in Strava, only the longest one counts. Workouts that only touch end to start count separately.
* Steps and workouts typed in by hand never count.

**Example:** you record a 5 km run in the morning and a 2 km walk in the evening, in a **Runs and walks** competition. That day scores 7,000 points. In a **Runs** competition, it scores 5,000.

## Create a Distance competition

1. Tap **+**, then **New competition**, and choose **Distance** on the scoring step.
2. On **Set the distance rule**, answer **Which workouts count?** with **Runs** or **Runs and walks**.
3. Choose an optional target (see below).
4. Under **What does the leaderboard show?**, choose **Miles** or **Kilometers** (whichever matches your units setting) or **Points**. This only changes how the leaderboard looks. Points are meters either way, and each person sees distances in their own units.
5. Finish the wizard and tap **Create competition**.

A competition can't be switched to Distance later, and the host can't ask the group to change scoring to Distance. Its rules can only be set when it's created.

## The target to qualify

**Set a target to qualify** is on by default. It never changes points: the leaderboard still ranks by distance. It adds a pass or fail for each person. Turn it off for a plain race where most distance wins.

The host sets:

* **The distance**, in whole miles or kilometers (1 to 300).
* **How do people reach it?** **In total** adds up all counting workouts. **In one go** needs a single workout that long.
* **How often?** **Every day**, **Every week**, or **Overall** (once across the whole competition).

With **Every week**, each full 7 days from the start date is one week. Leftover days after the last full week don't need their own target. Missing any finished day or week means that person doesn't qualify for that round. On a repeating competition, the target is checked every round.

**Example:** a 4-week competition with "3 miles, In total, Every week" needs 3 miles of counting workouts in each of the 4 weeks.

## Your progress

On the competition screen, the **This cycle's target** card shows the rule (for example, "Cover 3 mi every week to qualify."), your own total and longest workout, how many days or weeks you've hit, and how many people are on track or have qualified. It shows only your own numbers, plus counts for the group.

## Share your results with the organizer

The person who created a Distance competition can export a spreadsheet of results, but only for people who agree.

**As a participant:** on the Distance card, turn on **Share my results with the organizer**. It lets the organizer export your weekly distance and pass or fail for this competition only. It's off by default, and you can turn it off any time. The next export leaves you out.

**As the organizer:** tap **Export results** on the Distance card. You get a CSV spreadsheet with one row per person per round: name, username, round dates, points, distance in miles and kilometers, longest single workout, and pass or fail when there's a target. People who didn't turn on sharing aren't in the file. Names follow the same privacy rules as the leaderboard, so a hidden name stays blank.
